There’s a lot of discussion going on about the changing complexion of our nation. The United States Census Bureau says people of color will outnumber whites by the year 20-42. Well is it just me, or has this change already occurred in the talk show medium? The number of African American talk show host seems to have grown almost overnight. What’s interesting is that this growth appears to be specific to African American women.
Here’s the breakdown. Of course we the queen herself the big O, Oprah (no last name required) holding down day-time. Also in day-time is fashion model turned mogul Tyra Banks with her own brand of love yourself , love you body, don’t take the abuse, don’t do drugs, make her over, get your education, blah, blah, blah, and blah shows. New comer Wendy Williams brings her gossip themed radio show to television complete with big hair, big boobs and a big fun. Who could forget the girls of the View? Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Sheppard literally add color to the set of the show. Daytime talk is not the only place where African American women can be seen. Comedians Mo’nique and Wanda Sykes have both introduced late night talk shows.
Although white males still dominate late night talk, African American women are most certainly a force to be reckoned with. This is a definite sign that not only is the nation getting browner, there also a lot more estrogen going around as well.

Okay so we all know by now the missing balloon-boy scare was all a hoax. The parents, Richard and Mayumi Heene, are being investigated and could possibly do some jail time, to which I say “good.” Here’s a thought what about some sort of punishment for the many accomplices to this crime. There’s a lot of blame to go around here. Just where did these parent get the idea that one could perform some sensational act, grab the attention of million, and then capitalize on that attention? Ah… can you say “the media?” It’s not a stretch to say the Heenes were motivated by their brief stint in the spotlight on the realty show “Wife Swop.” There used to be a time when a reality show personality accepted their fifteen minutes of fame and then quietly disappear. They were happy being the main draw at the grand opening of the local hardware store, but all that has changed. By reinforcing the idea that reality TV is the key to stardom the media may very well have encouraged the inexcusable behavior of the Heenes. Okay… I’ll admit I’m reaching. I’m sure if we tried hard enough we could blame the media for all the worlds’ evils. These are grown people who knew what they were doing. However, can we please stop acting like these reality folks are doing something special? Besides, don’t we all have enough drama in our own realities? I know I do.

Most of us who consider ourselves to be somewhat intelligent, we take our news very seriously. We read The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and we watch CNN. Many us wouldn’t be caught dead thumbing through a rag like the National Enquirer, know widely for sensationalism and gossip. Nevertheless, as I read the recent reports surrounding the extramarital affair of former senator and 2008 presidential candidate John Edwards (in The New York Times), I can’t help but wonder if the reporting done by the “rag” is indirectly responsible for the history making election of Barrack Obama. I know it’s a stretch, but follow me.
The New York Times has recently reported former senator and 2008 presidential candidate John Edwards is considering declaring that he is the father of the 19-month-old daughter of his former mistress Rielle Hunter. Edwards has strongly denied all claims of paternity since admitting to the affair. The piece goes on to discuss the possibility that Edwards pleaded with former aide; Andrew Young to falsely say the child was his. What a mess for Edwards, it’s almost painful to watch as a once promising political career goes down the drain.
I remember watching as John Edwards announced his endorsement of Barrack Obama for the democratic nomination. There they were two young, intelligent, well-liked, handsome politicians one African American and one white sharing a stage united in their cause. I remember thinking “this is the team that can win the election.” But more importantly, I thought “This is the team that America needs to win.” Then along comes that pesky Enquirer, digging up stuff.
When it comes to scandalous affairs and politicians, the question isn’t “If it will be exposed?” but “When will it be exposed?” It’s no secret John Edwards was on Obama’s Short list of possible running mates. If he were chosen, it’s a safe bet the GOP would have used every opportunity to exploit Edward’s affair and somehow smear Obama by association. Edwards would have become Obama’s Sarah Palin But worse. Fortunately for Obama, the story came to light in plenty of time for him to distance himself from Edwards.
And that my friend is how the National Enquirer helped to make history.

Rude Dude

Is it just me, or has rudeness and disrespect become the norm when arguing a point. Tennis champ Serena Williams lashed out at a referee when she didn’t agree with his call, House Representative Joe Wilson shouts “You lie” at President Barack Obama during his speech to Congress; and Rapper Kanye West grabs a microphone from Taylor Swift at MTV’s Video Music awards to protest her win over Beyonce for Best Female Video. Well the truth is I don’t really think this behavior has become the norm, but we have been seeing a lot of it lately. The media has done an excellent job in showing us these outbursts. The problem is outburst becomes more of a story then the event in which they occur. President Obama used his appearances on several Sunday morning talk shows to voice his opinion had on this very subject.

“I think it’s important for the media — you know, not to do any media-bashing here — to recognize that right now, in this 24-hour news cycle, the easiest way to get on CNN or FOX or any of the other stations — MSNBC — is to just say something rude and outrageous,” Obama said. “And, you know, part of what I’d like to see is all of us reward decency and civility in our political discourse. That doesn’t mean you can’t be passionate, and that doesn’t mean that you can’t speak your mind. But I think we can all sort of take a step back here and remind ourselves who we are as a people.”

Is the media totally at fault here? Or are they just giving us what we want? What I think is…Irresponsible sensationalized journalism satisfies a public hungry for junk food.
